I'm Matt Coulam, and I manage 800,000 square feet of commercial retail and industrial space in northern Utah and Idaho. I've been doing this for almost seven years now. As a property manager, trying to explain the benefits of Smart Rain, I think a lot of us in the management industry focus on utility costs like gas and electric, often overlooking the savings on water. We spend a lot of time dealing with on-site watering system issues, but now that Smart Rain has come along, I spend about a quarter of my time on those things. I can turn everything over to Smart Rain—they monitor it for me and print out reports on how much water I've used. It's a phenomenal way to manage your property, and I think it's the way of the future.

I was on site once, and a car was getting wet. I called the Smart Rain office, and literally within 30 seconds, the water was off. Normally, I would have to call my maintenance guy, who would take 30 to 45 minutes to come over, go to the sprinkler box, and turn it off. It just isn't as efficient. With Smart Rain, that is a huge benefit we've seen in saving costs, as simple as turning off water.

I currently manage 800,000 square feet and have installed Smart Rain on 200,000 square feet. I would like to do it on the rest of my portfolio because I've seen the savings on the 200,000 square feet we've done. It's such a benefit to know that I have someone in the industry who knows water consumption, has been through the training, and can tell me how much I've saved, literally to the cent. Then, I can turn around and tell my owners how much we've saved. It's an absolute benefit to anyone who would like to put it on their property.
